“Flowers are so impactful, full of movement and character, and never will go out of style” – Willa Rose Floral – We love how today’s editorial shoot directed by Aimee Paquin and Julia Griffin shows us this direction in an overgrowing nature retaking an abandoned space. With flowers that literally grow from the floor, the table or fall from the ceiling, this garden inspired shoot is a pure ode to nature !
From Julia, the floral designer
“Last month, Aimee Paquin of Modernly Events and I, Julia Griffin of Willa Rose Floral, gathered some of our favorite Detroit vendors for a styled wedding photoshoot inspired by nature retaking an abandoned space. Our venue, a beautiful historic building just outside downtown Detroit called the Jam Handy, was originally a film studio and has a really industrial, urban vibe. Like many other buildings in Detroit, it sat vacant for many years before two brothers rehabbed it and turned it into one of the more unique event spaces in the city.
“We wanted the shoot to emulate overgrowth in abandonment”
We wanted the shoot to emulate overgrowth in abandonment, through flowers growing out of the floor, from the ceiling, out of the cake, and even from the model’s face and body. Alongside the florals, we added sustainable hand-dyed linens from Rosemarine Textiles, capiz place cards with an ethereal feel and calligraphy on deckle-edge paper from Plume & Proper, and minimal, modern rentals from Modernly Events and Event Theory to tie together our back-to-nature theme.
As a floral designer, one of my goals for this shoot was to do my own take on a traditional garland. I think the greenery trend is starting to fade in floral designs and we are moving towards a much more bloom heavy trend. The garland here is made completely out of flowers and truly looks like a garden from a dreamscape — the blooms seem to be growing right out of the table. This concept would really bring a sweetheart table to life, or could be used on long tables in place of a more traditional tied or wrapped garland.
Although we took a more editorial approach to this shoot, the concept of building bespoke florals around a unique space can easily be applied to real weddings — and can really elevate standard wedding decor into something unforgettable and truly one-of-a-kind.
Garden ceremonies are beautiful, but with some imagination, the concept of a garden setting can be applied to any kind of venue — and that nature-meets-urban vibe was the key to our vision for this shoot.
